Hunter Square Spire Repurposed in Miner Avenue Beautification Project

Updated: Apr 20, 2022

The spire, which once sprayed water from its organ-like pipes, was removed in January 2014 as Hunter Square and the fountain were demolished to make way for the new San Joaquin County Courthouse. The roundabout is a part of street improvements, which began in September 2020, to Miner Avenue, which include a reduction in travel lanes from two to one, the inclusion of buffered bike lanes and median landscaping between Center and Aurora streets. The spire has been repainted gold and will serve as a centerpiece of the roundabout and street improvements.

Workers erect the repurposed 27-foot tall spire from the former Hunter Square fountain in a new roundabout at Miner Avenue and San Joaquin Street in downtown Stockton. The spire, which once sprayed water from its organ-like pipes, was removed in January 2014 as Hunter Square and the fountain were demolished to make way for the new San Joaquin County Courthouse.
